Eating Out Rest of the UK

Review: La Becasse, Ludlow

2nd June 2013

I for one was pretty surprised to see last January that La Becasse had lost it’s Michelin star, for Lee and I had certainly rated it among one of the best Michelin starred meals we had eaten to that point in the summer of 2011.  Certainly worthy of one when we ate there, and clouds above a certain few that still hold theirs.

Ludlow is a lovely market town in Shropshire, with plenty of quaint cafe’s shops and stunning surrounding countryside, La Becasse lies unobtrusively on one of the relatively main streets, the unpretentious outside belying the beautiful almost grotto like inside with lovely stone walls and panelling.

We had the 5 course gourmand menu, comprising of several dishes made up of particular favourites of mine, venison and monkfish tail.

These were my standout dishes of the day, but I was also surprised by how much I enjoyed the goats cheese course seeing as it was paired with a couple of my lesser favoured ingredients; raspberry and beetroot. Just goes to show I suppose when an ingredient is treated well and made special it can convert even the most doubting of customers.

The lamb was cooked perfectly, and the confit neck melt in your mouth, complimented perfectly with the bittersweet flavour of fennel and liquorice.

The pre desert Pimms jelly was a delightful deconstruction of the fruity summer drink, and the salted caramel jelly the highlight of an above average desert.

Local wood pigeon carpacio, foie gras terrine,
mango salsa, sesame and coriander

Ragstone goat’s cheese mousse, beetroot and raspberry,
balsamic jelly, pain d’épice, hazelnut dressing

South coast monkfish tail, basil potato puree, ratatouille,
sauce vierge and shaved fennel

New season lamb – herb crusted leg and confit neck,
‘Anna’ potato, fennel jam and liquorice

Pimms Jelly, cucumber foam, dried strawberries

Dark chocolate torte, salted caramel jelly, lime curd, local cherries, cobnut praline

We are definitely looking forward to planning another visit, hoping it can live up tot he high regard we hold it in.
