Eating Out Rest of the UK

Review: Rick Stein’s Cafe, Padstow Cornwall

We were not planning on eating at Rick Steins’ Cafe, but after a planned day trip to the Eden Project and being a little underwhelmed, what had been a whole day plan ended up with us coming back over Padstow by about 2pm. On a whim as we had not had lunch already we decided to see if there were any tables. Luckily for us there were, it was busy, but a few tables had started to clear after the lunchtime rush. The cafe is lovely inside, comfy benches, cushions and a great atmosphere.

The lunch menu seemed pretty comprehensive, catering for those that just want a light bite, or a full meal and it was nice too see a lot of influence from his travels round the Far East and Asia.

We only wanted something small, so I went for the Pad Thai with King Prawns, while Lee had the Hot Smoked Salmon Salad with Radicchio, Beetroot and Horseradish dressing.

My dish was great, you could imagine eating it straight from the street vendors in Thailand, and the hot, salty, sweet and sour flavours were really punchy. The prawns were perfect, and absolutely huge!

Lee’s salad was also delicious (I stole a bit!) Great classic flavours, all really well balanced and complimenting each other very well.

Some other choices off the lunch menu included Feta tart with caramelised onions, oven roasted tomatoes and basil and Mr singh’s slow-cooked lamb curry with cloves and cardamom. They also have a blackboard with a few specials for the day – when we went there was a great sounding curry straight from Rick’s most recent book,  Rick Stein’s India.

The prices are accessible to all, and having a quick sneeky peek at the dinner menu while we were there showed that they do a really reasonably price set dinner menu; 3 courses for £22.50. Another nice touch I thought was that they leave a basket of sample menus in the entranceway that people can takeaway with them – nice for people that would like a bit of a souvenir from their meal. A great place to relax with friends, for a long lazy lunch, a quick bite or a fab dinner.
