Now I guess this post is a little off track from the general theme of my blog… but I’ve never been to a baby shower before (I always thought they were an American thing?) so when I was invited to one at the beginning of August I was excited and intrigued. And it was so much fun I thought I write just a short little post about it.
So what happens at a baby shower? Well I didn’t know the answer to this, I assumed there would be food involved (always good!) and maybe some general chat, gift giving etc. Well there was all this, and add in some good old fashioned party games tailored to the baby theme and you are in store for a riotous afternoon. I haven’t laughed as much in a good while. There’s nothing like a group of 8 females trying to whack open a baby pram shaped piñata with a wooden spoon to create a few giggles (Pics of this to follow..) This did create possibly the most serious conversation of the afternoon though as apparently when choosing the shape of the piñata you could buy a baby shaped one. Is this ethically correct? To promote the beating of a baby (even a cardboard baby filled with haribo?) I’ll leave that open to debate but we were all glad Suzanne had decided against it…
The baby shower market must really be taking off in the UK because the lovely host of this shower had purchased everything from a hen do style ‘Mum to Be’ sash to baby themed bingo sheets, a nursey rhyme quiz game, a ‘Pin the Dummy on the Baby’ kit, as well as the aforementioned piñata! Needless to say the games got a little competitive (not me ahem!) and the winners were rewarded by treats of smellies and sweets.
All this laughing was accompanied by lots of food goodies, including some fantastic homemade scones (Janet) and some amazing ‘baby style’ cupcakes courtesy of Mrs Bee aka Donna. These really were spectacularly decorated and tasted as good as they looked so check out her facebook page if you’re in need of a cake making – highly recommended.
All in all it was a really great afternoon; we regressed to our childhood with party games, laughed like a pack of hyenas and ate sweets until we could eat no more. I will certainly be hosting a baby shower for some of my lucky friends in the future!
