Review: The Jekyll & Hyde, Birmingham

The Jekyll and Hyde offers something a little different. Downstairs a lovely cosy bar, with great cocktails and upstairs a gin parlour, offering a great range of gin and some appetising sounding food.


I met a friend after a work for a quick bite to eat and a de-stressing cocktail! I was initially a little disappointed at the slightly limited food menu available in the bar because as it was a Monday, and the gin parlour wasn’t open, but I soon came round to the idea of a burger after trying one of their utterly delicious cocktails. I had a ‘Wild Ting’ which comprised of Havana Rum, Guava and Passion Fruit Syrups, Ting Soda and a Wray and Nephew flaming lime boat! My friend had a ‘Turkish delight’ which amongst other things,  had rose syrup, lychee liqueur and cranberry juice and came in a little jar, complete with piece of turkish delight! For me it was a little sweet but my friend loved it. I love quirky original cocktails, they really are a talking point, and the more interesting and creative the better. These were definitely that, and had I not been driving I would have tried a good few more! There are some fab pictures of some on their website – I am particulate intrigued by one served in a mini bathtub….

Moving on to the food. The menu was compiled of several ‘light bites’ which looked nice, including Potted Ham Hock and a Cous Cous Salad, but I was quite hungry having skipped lunch so went for The James Brown Burger; Southern Style Chicken, Avacado, Bacon and BBQ sauce served with sweet potato fries. The Burger was nice, well cooked chicken, still juicy, crispy bacon and avocado, classical flavours and done well. It actually came with regular fries rather than sweet potato without anyone mentioning it, but I didn’t actually realise this until my friend pointed it out half way through, by which time it wasn’t worth mentioning! My friend also had a burger – The Adam Richman Burger; steak mince patty, pulled pork, bacon, spicy mayo, fried onions and cheddar with rustic fries. She really enjoyed the burger but felt the chips were a bit ‘anaemic’ to quote her exact words. Pale and marginally undercooked in mine. Great burger buns and colslaw too, the little things can make all the difference. All in all a tasty, filling dinner, good value for money and a fantastic venue.

There are also some great events hosted at The Jekyll and Hyde including cocktail masterclasses, supper clubs and quiz nights. I’m really looking forward to going back for dinner in the Gin Parlour sometime soon!
