Product Review: Ship's Biscuits, The Pembrokeshire Beach Food Co

21st November 2013

imagesWe’re on the countdown now to the BBC Good Food Show Winter at the NEC in Birmingham and I have been eagerly finding out about some of the fantastic exhibitors. The Pembrokeshire Beach Food Co were chosen out of hundreds of applicants to be one of the bursary award winners for small artisan producers. I was very excited to receive a sample of their ‘Ships Biscuits’ to try!*

Let me tell you a little about the company: It was established first of all through having a street food ‘shack’ and touring festivals and events, excelling and winning several awards  in 2011 and 2012 before having the honour of serving their food at the London Olympics. They then branched out into retail, and several of their well-loved products are now available to buy, including: Potted Lobster and Crab, Laverbread Pesto, Welsh Sea Black Butter and Pepper Dulse Butter as well as The Ships Biscuits that I got to try.

Ships biscuits are one of the names given to the hardy crackers that went aboard ships with sailors in times gone by ahead of a long voyage – it was believed then that a biscuit a day was very good for health. They were hard-baked and would keep intact for a long time as long as they were kept dry!

The biscuits from the Beach Food Co are gorgeous rustic little fish-shaped crackers with laverbread added to the dough and then topped with Dulse seaweed and Halon Mon sea salt. I must say these crackers are sooooo good. They have a really unique and quite unusual flavour. The sea salt and seaweed is a great combination and if you close your eyes you can even taste the seaside. They have a great crunch to them and I think they would be great with all sorts of different things, potted fish, meat and cheese, or just to snack on, on their own. I’m really looking forward to seeing the Pembrokeshire Beach Food Company at the BBC Good Food Show and trying and buying some more of their produce. Hunt them down in the Bursary Award area and say hello, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed with what they’ve got on offer!

Disclosure: I received a free sample of Ships Biscuits to try, but all thoughts and opinions are my own and no other compensation was received
