When I was asked to review Yacon Syrup, if I’m honest I hadn’t heard of it. Doing a bit of research I found out that it is a natural sweetener, but also used as a weight loss aide. I decided that I would be keen to review it – to try out its use as a natural sweetener but a bit of weight loss wouldn’t hurt either!
Yacon is a popular food in South America, and the syrup comes from the root of the yacon plant which is indigenous to the Andes and was widely eaten by the Incans for thousands of years.
Yacon is a sweet and tasty syrup and is also a prebiotic, which can boost the digestive tract bacteria. It can be used in cooking in place of sugar, is virtually calorie free and doesn’t cause blood glucose levels to spike. Because of this it is thought to have weight loss benefits also.

I’ve been using Yacon for a couple of weeks now – I’ve been substituting it in my cups of tea instead of my usual one sweetener and have also given it a go in some salad dressings, in place of sugar, like the one they have in the recipe section of the website. I have also tried it out in making some cookies which actually worked out a lot better than expected, so I think I will definitely try it out in other forms of baking too. In terms of weight loss, a couple of pounds have been shed, so I will try it out for a bit longer.
If you’re looking for a natural sweetener to replace sugar to try, or to try and aid weight loss then Yacon may well be what you are looking for. You can buy it here on amazon.
