Eating Out Rest of the World

Review: El Deseo, Ibiza

25th July 2015

I’ve recently been telling you about our holiday in Cala Llonga. Probably the best food we found in the resort of on our recent trip to Ibiza was at a place called El Deseo. It certainly wasn’t traditional Spanish food but an odd fusion of Spanish, Mexican and Asian. It shouldn’t have worked. It did.

I loved the simple decor, very apt for its relaxed location near the beach. I particularly like the Eat Drink Smile Nap picture – very relevant for Spain!

They had a delicious sounding cocktail list – we enjoyed the Solero, Caramel Apple Martini and Green & Mean on our couple of visits.

On our first visit we decided to share dishes from their tapas and street food sections of the menu instead of going for the more traditional starter main pud option. Well, we were in Spain after all.

We tried:

  • Guacamole with nachos
  • Caramelized Pork Ribs marinated in Jack Daniels
  • Mayan Prawns
  • Pork & Pineapple Tacos
  • Chicken Tinga Tacos
  • Chicken Satay
  • Patatas Bravas with Homemade Chili Sauce

The food was SO much better than we expected it might be. The rib meat fell of the bone and the sauce was so divine we were mopping it up with anything we could find. The prawns were large juicy and perfectly cooked. The guacamole was fresh and chunky with a huge lime and coriander hit. The tortillas for the tacos themselves were homemade and the chilli sauce over the patatas was spot on. A really excellent array of dishes.

Second time around we went down the starter and main course route. I had Tuna Sashimi and then a Buffalo Chicken Burger, whilst Lee had Buffalo Wings and then A Chilli Beef Burrito. Again, tasty food, cooked really well with punchy flavours and fresh ingredients.

Oh, and pretty good value too. This huge plate of tuna sashimi was 8 Euro…

We finished of the meal both times with a shot of Mezcal – made from the maguey plant native to Mexico. With an orange segment dusted with cinnamon this was a beautiful way to end the meal.
